Printable file licensing
A printable file licensing is a license agreement for STL files 3D models regulating printing rights, distribution, commercial use. With 3D printing growth, 3D models become intellectual property needing protection.
Practical example: Someone creates detailed 3D chess figure model posts Thingiverse (3D models platform). Agreement says: “Model available Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license—meaning: (1) Can print personally; (2) Can’t use commercially without permission; (3) If use, must credit me.”
License types: (1) CC0—completely free, no restrictions; (2) CC BY—must credit me; (3) CC BY-NC—can’t sell without permission; (4) CC BY-SA—if use, must share same license; (5) Proprietary—only owner can print.
Licensing advantages: (1) Protection—owner protects work; (2) Flexibility—different licenses different needs; (3) Community—communicates what’s allowed; (4) Transparency—clear what can do with model.
For startups: If creating 3D models selling sharing free, should choose appropriate license.
